What to prepare before registering with SSM
Prepare the structure, name, business nature, address and owner details before entering the SSM process. This guide focuses on sole proprietorships and partnerships; company incorporation has different requirements.
1. Decide the registration structure
SSM describes a sole proprietorship as a business owned by one person and a partnership as one owned by two or more people. A Sdn Bhd follows the company regime. Consider ownership, responsibility, customers and funding before choosing a path.
- Will you operate alone or with formal partners?
- Do you need a separate company entity?
- Do customers, banks or investors require a specific structure?
2. Prepare the business name
A personal name and a trade name are not handled in exactly the same way. Prepare a preferred and backup name, and avoid wording that implies regulated activity or government affiliation without approval.
3. Describe the business nature
Describe the main activity accurately instead of using only broad terms such as trading or services. List genuine near-term secondary activities so licensing, banking and tax records can stay aligned.
4. Confirm the operating address
Prepare the principal and branch addresses. For a home, shared or rented premise, check tenancy, building-use, local-authority and management conditions first.
5. Record the commencement date
Distinguish the actual start date from a plan. The registration information asks for commencement; if the correct treatment is unclear, confirm with SSM rather than guessing.
6. Organise owner or partner details
- Identity and current contact details
- Confirmation and participation of each partner
- Partnership agreement where relevant
- Consistent names, addresses and spelling
7. Check licences and approvals
MalaysiaBiz states that business owners remain responsible for licences, permits and approval letters required by other authorities after SSM registration. Food, education, childcare, health, tourism and signboard activities warrant particular attention.
8. Plan the post-registration work
Registration is a starting point. Tax identity, banking, local licences, records and e-Invoice readiness may follow; hiring also brings KWSP and PERKESO responsibilities.
